Essentially Tufts: Katrina Barry

Katrina Barry stood at the Kindlevan Café register, ringing up a student she knew by name. She joked with him a few times, her strong Boston accent shining through, and she asked how his long weekend was. As one of many food service workers at Tufts, Barry is well-connected around campus, known for her bright personality and intentionality to connect with students.

Essentially Tufts: Melvin Calderón

Melvin Calderón — who works for C&W Services, a cleaning company contracted by Tufts for the Medford/Somerville campus — sat in Room 313 of the Olin Center for Language and Cultural Studies during his dinner break. Next to him sat two used paper plates, a navy blue lunch box and Colleen Hoover’s 2016 novel, “It Ends With Us.” As he recounted the story of how he learned to speak English, YouTube elevator music played from his iPad.

New ExCollege class seeks to connect students with sustainability at Tufts

Among the 37 Experimental College courses available to students this spring semester, one was brought about by initiatives in Tufts’ Office of Sustainability. Sustainable Spring is a one-credit introductory course taught by Professor Ann Ward, the Education and Outreach Specialist in the Office of Sustainability. The office team, including Ward, assembled this course as a way to teach first-year and sophomore students about sustainability at Tufts.

Tying the knot at Tufts

Aug. 7, 2009 was a classic New England August day: hot, humid and sticky. Tim and Sara Nelson were holding their rehearsal dinner in Harvard Square that evening, anxiously awaiting their wedding ceremony the next day. The heat was on their minds. The next day, however, they woke up to clear skies and a comfortable temperature as they kicked off their wedding ceremonies in Medford, Mass. Tufts graduate Tim Nelson (E’04, EG’07) andClark University alumna Sara Nelson were married in Goddard Chapel on the campus of Tufts University on Aug. 8, 2009.
