T Time: A Trip to Jamaica (Plain)

This past weekend, I decided to visit a neighborhood I’ve never been to before — Jamaica Plain. I’ve always been intrigued by its name — why is a neighborhood in Boston named Jamaica? Plus, one of my best friends is from there and raves about how much she loves it. Getting to Jamaica Plain is a bit of a trip; it took me a bit more than 45 minutes each way. If you are interested in visiting, you can hop on the Green Line at the Medford/Tufts Station, take it to North Station, then transfer to a Forest Hills-bound Orange Line train and get off at Green Street. From the Green Street Station, it’s about a 10-minute walk to the core commercial area of Jamaica Plain.

T Time: Just around the Coolidge Corner

This weekend, instead of watching the Head Of The Charles — which I regret not attending — I took advantage of the beautiful weather and took a trip to Coolidge Corner in Brookline. For those interested in visiting, you can take the Green Line from the Medford/Tufts station, transfer to the Green Line C branch between Government Center and Copley and take it to Coolidge Corner station. All in all, the trip took a little bit under an hour.

T Time: Two stops down the Red Line

After a brief hiatus, I’m excited to resume publishing T Time. Every other week, I’ll visit a new station on the MBTA and share a little bit about the station’s history, the neighborhood’s history and fun things to do in the area. As this edition’s title suggests, today I’m discussing a station two stops south of Davis Square on the Red Line: Harvard. For those interested in visiting, you can take the Red Line from Davis and travel two stops or you can take the 96 bus from campus, which makes stops at the corner of Winthrop and Boston Ave, outside the Dowling Garage and at the bottom of the Memorial Steps. The train takes about five to 10 minutes to get from Davis to Harvard while the bus takes between 15 and 25 minutes, depending on traffic.

T Time: A trip to Wonderland

​This past weekend I took a trip to one of the MBTA’s most uniquely named stations — Wonderland. Despite its faults, I give the T credit for giving its stations better names than “blah blah street” or “so and so avenue.” Some of my personal favorites include Alewife, Haymarket, Brandon Hall and Beachmont. For those interested in traveling to Wonderland, take the Green Line from Medford/Tufts to Government Center and then transfer to an outbound Blue Line train and take it all the way to the end of the line. The trip was about 45 minutes each way which is a bit long, but worth it in my opinion.

T Time: Spring in Central Square

This past Sunday, I woke up early, hopped on the T, and spent my morning strolling around Central Square and the surrounding neighborhoods. For those interested in visiting, you can take the Red Line from Davis Square and reach your destination within 20 minutes.

T Time: The ‘Green Line Extension World Tour’ to Union Square

For today’s column, I performed what I am calling a “Green Line Extension World Tour” on my way to visit Union Square station. In my travels, I passed through all sixGLX stations plus Lechmere. For those interested in visiting Union Square, you can take the Green Line from the Medford/Tufts station to Lechmere and then transfer to an outbound Green Line D.

T Time: The mystery of Riverside Station

If you have ever looked at a map of the MBTA on your phone, you may have noticed that the D branch of the Green Line extends far west of Boston like a long, green tentacle, ending at Riverside Station. This quirk of the T has always intrigued me. Why does the D branch extend so much farther than other branches of the Green Line? What mysteries lurk at Riverside Station? To answer these questions that rattle in the back of my mind, I dove into the world of investigative journalism and journeyed to Riverside Station.

Typically, I use this column to focus on one specific MBTA station and the neighborhood surrounding it. However, I recently traveled out of Boston via plane and Amtrak, so I thought it would be helpful to discuss how to use the T to access other forms of transportation, especially before the upcoming winter break.
