Men's lacrosse returns, handily defeats Colby

The Tufts men’s lacrosse team had a commanding start to the season on Saturday in its first game and home opener with a 27–7 win over Colby.  Tufts brought the intensity in the first quarter against a Colby team that looked defeated in warmups. The game was an opportunity for a lot of young players to see their first minutes on Bello Field and have a positive contribution to the outcome of the game. The Final Whistle: The recent rise of Real Betis

La Liga is often characterized by the big three: Real Madrid, F.C. Barcelona and Atletico Madrid. In recent years, Sevilla, Real Sociedad and Villarreal have cemented themselves as the chasing pack with impressive campaigns both domestically and in Europe. None would’ve foreseen Real Betis’ ascent over the last two years. In the 2019–20 season, Betis finished 15th with a points tally of just 41, five points off the drop zone. In July 2020, veteran Chilean manager Manuel Pellegrini was appointed head coach. His debut season saw Betis finish sixth, securing Europa League football and appearing in the quarterfinals of the Copa Del Rey. Today, Los Verdiblancos sit fifth, two points adrift of Barcelona and defending champions Atletico Madrid. But how has Pellegrini turned the fortunes of this fringe midtable side into dark horses challenging for Champions League status?

How soccer has responded to the Russia-Ukraine war

On Feb. 24, Russia began its invasion of Ukraine after weeks of speculation regarding military buildup across the border. Since then, clouds of smoke have circled above the major cities of Kharkiv and Chernihiv as airstrikes continue inflicting both military and civilian casualties. In response to the attacks on Kyiv, Ukraine’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba reminded the world that the last time its capital suffered such a catastrophe was in 1941 against Nazi Germany. The tremors of Russia’s actions have been felt across the globe, and soccer has responded firmly.

Over the Top Football: The role of performative acts in the Premier League

While the game is played with a ball on a field and two goal posts, soccer transcends the events within the pitch.
