After dropping three matches in the Boston Invite on the weekend of Sept. 13, Tufts volleyball eagerly notched victories in their first in-conference matches against Hamilton College and Amherst College. On the night of Sept. 20, the Jumbos took to Cousens Gymnasium to take on the Hamilton Continentals. With sophomore Claire Castor leading the way with 20 kills, along with 27 assists and 21 digs from sophomore Rianna Liu, the team charged to a 3–0 victory.

Missed opportunities sink Jumbos in battle with Cardinals

Following the thrilling 23-21 season-opening win against Bowdoin, Tufts took to the road to face off against the Wesleyan Cardinals. Similarly to the Jumbos, Wesleyan entered the matchup undefeated on the young season, posting a 43-7 rout of Middlebury in their week one game. The game's opening moments could not have gone worse for the Jumbos. On the very first play from scrimmage, Wesleyan senior quarterback Niko Candido hit senior wide receiver Chase Wilson for a 75-yard touchdown, slicing right over the top of the Tufts secondary. After a missed extra point attempt, Wesleyan led 6–0 just nine seconds into the game.

In the Crease: The preseason is underway

For the first time since June, NHL games are being played again as the preseason started on Saturday. The preseason gives prospects and young players the opportunity to stand out with the hopes of earning a roster spot while letting veteran NHL players get back into shape for the upcoming season, both physically and mentally. Coaches also use the preseason as a time to test out certain line combinations in hopes of finding the best player combinations in time for the start of the regular season.

Field hockey piles on two more wins on the road against the Engineers and Continentals

Tufts field hockey cruised through last week, taking both away games against MIT and Hamilton 2–0 and 3–0. On Saturday, graduate student midfielder Andrea DelGiudice scored two goals in the second quarter. Junior forward Hannah Biccard extended the lead in the fourth quarter following a well-placed pass by senior forward Claire Gavin. With the win, the Jumbos improved their NESCAC record to 3–1. In the matchup against MIT, both teams were ranked within the top 15 of Division 3 teams. Sophomore midfielder Claire Casey and senior forward Kylie Rosenquest took charge offensively, with Casey scoring the first goal of her career in the final minutes of the second quarter. Rosenquest sealed the game in the fourth after a penalty was awarded to the Jumbos.

Men’s soccer dominates in road win over Hamilton

Tufts men’s soccer arrived in Clinton, New York seeking their first road win at Hamilton in seven years. Further, the team was stepping onto Love Field following a six-hour bus ride in front of a raucous crowd celebrating Family Weekend. The Jumbos needed to be at their best.

Tufts football opens the season with a thrilling victory over Bowdoin

As Jumbo pride inundated Medford and Somerville for Homecoming, the Tufts football team, led by Coach Jay Civetti, hoped to finish the day victoriously against Bowdoin College. Tufts defeated Bowdoin 24–10 on the road last season, and today the team had the boost of roaring support from the Tufts community around them. The team, which lost last year’s opening match to Trinity, entered Ellis Oval with determination and grit.

Merseyside welcomes Federico Chiesa

The last noteworthy Italian to grace Anfield was Mario Balotelli. Enigmatic to say the least, widely remembered for his title-winning assist to Sergio Aguero for Manchester City Football Club and a scintillating 2012 UEFA European Football Championship campaign, Balotelli was a breath of fresh air for a stale Liverpool Football Club.

Moments ‘til Madness: The All-Americans

With just two months left of waiting, college basketball could not come any sooner. Teams have worked all offseason to shore up their rosters and get ready for the 2024–25 season. Now that the transfer portal, which is essentially free agency, is over, here are my predictions for the All-America first team.

Tufts men’s soccer beats Williams with last-minute goal

Tufts men’s soccer started NESCAC play with a 1–0 win against Williams College last weekend. The teams battled for nearly 87 minutes without a goal, but the scoreless streak was eventually broken by sophomore forward Xavier Canfin. While the Jumbos had many good shots on goal throughout the game, Canfin’s shot, assisted by graduate student midfielder Liam Gerkin and junior midfielder James Gunn, was the only one that found the back of the net.

Tufts volleyball earns experience and a victory on Missouri road trip

Days after opening the 2024 campaign with a win against Worcester Polytechnic Institute in straight sets on Sep. 3, the Tufts women’s volleyball team traveled to Washington University in St. Louis for a trio of matches against competitive opponents. Flexibility with the lineup, point-by-point adjustments and strong serve reception performances were the highlights of the weekend, and the Jumbos returned to Medford with an even record ahead of a slate of home matches.

In the Crease: Tragedy strikes the sports world

The hockey community and the entire sports world woke up to devastating news Friday morning. The Columbus Blue Jackets reported the tragic passing of their star forward Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew in New Jersey. According to reports from the New Jersey State Police, the brothers were on a bike ride when a vehicle, driven by a man suspected to be driving under the influence, fatally struck them from behind.

Women’s rowing and men’s lacrosse celebrate national championships at the White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C., more commonly known as the White House, is one of the most exclusive addresses in the world. To reside there, one has to win a presidential election, and to work there, one has to be appointed to a highly prestigious cabinet position. There is a third method of garnering an invitation to the Executive Mansion, and it may be the most difficult of the three to achieve: winning an NCAA national championship.

Extra Innings: MLB's lifeline

During this summer’s Olympics, I watched Katie Ledecky absolutely demolish her competition in the women’s 1500 freestyle final, breaking her own Olympic record and winning the gold medal by over 10 seconds. Ledecky has been so dominant in the event throughout her career that the race was over before it began and everyone knew it. And yet, I was absolutely captivated. Knowing what the outcome would be didn’t take away from the joy of watching one of the most dominant athletes of all time excel at her craft.

The Round-off Roundup: What is the right way to choose an Olympic team?

Both the 2024 Paris Olympics U.S. men’s and women’s gymnastics teams were two of the most successful in recent history. Both teams were named using a completely different method. This year, the men's team was selected through a new pre-defined algorithm solely utilizing scores from the U.S. National Championships and Olympic Trials, while the women’s team was selected by a discretionary committee based on performances throughout the whole competition season. Which is the better method?
