In Photos: Tufts Gymnastics Team takes flight

The Tufts Gymnastics Team became officially recognized in January 2024 as one of Tufts’ newest club sports, open to students of all experience levels. As a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Gymnastics Clubs, the team holds practices at Gymnastics Academy of Boston in Medford, near Ball Square. Go behind the scenes with Tufts Gymnastics at a recent practice.

In Photos: Step inside the Identity Centers

Dotted throughout Tufts’ campus are eight Identity Centers that compose the Division of Student Diversity and Inclusion. Visit these wood-frame houses for comfortable spaces to gather, study and find mutual community. Open during the week for student use, the centers also offer regular events, programs and mentorship. Many centers were founded and continue to be sustained as a result of student activism, most recently expressed in the calls to establish a Southwest Asian and North African identity center.

Tufts Animal Aid is a student-run organization under the Leonard Carmichael Society umbrella group that pairs volunteer undergraduate students with dogs in the nearby Medford and Somerville area to go on weekly walks. Take a brisk fall stroll with some of Animal Aid’s furry friends!

In Photos: Porter Square Books turns the page with new expansion

In November, Porter Square Books celebrated the official grand reopening of its Cambridge location — an expanded space 1,000 feet away from the previous shop. At 1815 Massachusetts Ave., the new location inside the Lesley University mall enabled the independent bookstore to expand its shelf capacity and offer more cafe seating. Page & Leaf Cafe makes its debut in the new space. Take a look inside the expanded world of Porter Square Books.

In Photos: Japanese Culture Club throws Studio Ghibli-themed Matsuri

Tufts students gathered at 51 Winthrop Street on Nov. 23 for the Japanese Culture Club Matsuri, an annual festival celebrating Japanese culture with this year’s theme inspired by Studio Ghibli. The event featured traditional music, dance performances, games and Japanese cuisine, including a performance by Brown University’s Gendo Taiko group.

In Photos: Tufts Ballroom Competition 2024

The annual Tufts Ballroom Competition brought collegiate teams and amateur ballroom dancers to the Joyce Cummings Center for a full Saturday of dancing. The Tufts Ballroom Team, the competition host, sent several pairs to the finals. Competition Coordinator Alejandro Forero Rey and Junior Competition Coordinator Eli Newman organized the event.

In Photos: Essence takes home the Riff-Off crown

Ten a capella groups. Only one victor. The Riff-Off brought all Tufts a capella groups under one roof at Cohen Auditorium in a competition sponsored by the Tufts University Social Collective. The Ladies of Essence defended last year’s win with another first-place finish on Friday night. The next-most votes went to the Jackson Jills while S-Factor landed in third place.

Mystic Lake, just two miles away from the Tufts campus, is home to a diverse collection of avian species. From sparrows to seagulls to swans, many birds call Mystic Lake home.

In Photos: Día de los Muertos

The Tufts Latinx Center and Mexican Culture Club held a Día de los Muertos celebration with the Tufts University Social Collective on Saturday. The event in Curtis Hall featured food, live mariachi music and dances by Ballet Folklórico. Guests could place a photo and ofrenda on an altar to honor the memory of loved ones who have passed.

In Photos: Volleyball takes down Endicott

Look back at Tufts volleyball’s 3–0 victory over Endicott College as the Jumbos head into the postseason. In their penultimate regular season match on Oct. 30, Tufts swept Endicott in three sets, 26–24, 25–20 and 25–14. Tufts, the No. 3 seed in the NESCAC tournament, faces Williams College at home this Friday at 6 p.m.

Performing arts groups took the stage at the Avenue of the Arts Festival on Saturday, one of the Parents and Family Weekend events. Along the length of Talbot Avenue, performances ranged from a capella, to opera, to musical theater.

In Photos: Indigenous Peoples Day Celebration

The indigenous students’ organization at tufts hosted the Indigenous Peoples’ Day Celebration on Sunday on the Res Quad. The event programs highlighted indigenous performances, guest speakers and vendors. Attendees could sample Wampanoag cuisine catered by Orange Peel Bakery and poke from Manoa Poke. Tufts student groups Ballet Folklórico and Tufts Bhangra were among the invited performers.
