Susie Church | Food Fight

This week, I ventured off into the wonderful world of cupcakes. If you're anything like me, you may have spent just a little too much time watching "Cupcake Wars" in high school and get all too excited by new, interesting cupcake recipes. I was eager to try two cupcake vendors in our area that pride themselves on their innovative flavors: SWEET Cupcakes and Kickass Cupcakes.

Ross Dember and Alex Schroeder | Five-feet nothing

There is almost no time better than now to be trying to stir up memories of childhood sports days. The NFL season is now five weeks in, the MLB playoffs are intensifying as the ALCS and NLCS games are being finalized and the NHL is back underway. I have plenty of inspiration to look to for the next story from my youth.

Lily Sieradzki | Media Junkie

Yesterday I had one of those screen days. I woke up, checked my texts and email, went to class, checked my Instagram, got home and got on Facebook, went to Tisch and read online PDFs for three hours with Spotify playing. And then, to end my day, I watched an episode of "The Wire" before bed. Wow, did my eyes hurt.

Inside the NFL | Giants, Steelers deal with incompetence, disappointment

In a season in which the Denver Broncos are putting up offensive numbers that match a game of "NFL Blitz" and the Kansas City Chiefs have won their first five games with a small-handed quarterback and a big-bellied coach, it is still strange seeing the two teams that have won four of the past eight Super Bowls enter week six with the same win total as the Jacksonville Jaguars. At 0-4 and 0-5, respectively, the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants already have their fans looking ahead to the draft in May.

Petar Todorov | Lab Notes

By now, we're a week deep into the government shutdown that started on Oct. 1. Many memorials in Washington, D.C. have been fenced off. The live stream panda cam at the National Zoo is gone until further notice. So, what exactly happens to science and technological innovation while Congress takes time to decide on a budget?

Ryan Buell | This Week in Hip-Hop

Hip-hop often gets a bad 'rap' (pardon the pun) for its apparent ignorance and promotion of materialism, violence and misogyny. From his unique facial hair and the grills on his teeth to the ignorance spouted from his mouth and the sparsely clad models in his music videos, Riff Raff would seem to be a confirmation of hip-hop's worst stereotypes. Or at least, that's how it appears on the surface. See, the thing is, Riff Raff doesn't actually take himself seriously. He is surprisingly self-aware and is even capable of light satire. To fully understand Riff Raff, we have to look at two very distinct trends in hip-hop today.

Lex Erath | Sugar and Spice

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the vast majority of you have at least heard of, if not read, Dante's "Inferno," the first part of his epic poem "Divine Comedy." For the clueless, the totally uncultured and those who live under a rock, the Inferno is basically a division of hell into nine different circles where souls are sent to various awful torments in accordance with their specific crimes. While Dante's breakdown is justly famous, it's a little outdated and not at all applicable to life here at Tufts. And so, without further ado, I present to you Lex's Inferno, the Nine Circles of Tufts.

Jumbos win fourth NESCAC game, outlast Panthers

The men's soccer players went out to Kraft Field on Saturday without their best stuff - their through balls were just going long, their crosses weren't finding blue jerseys - all while Middlebury players seemed to keep creating shots. But the sign of a good team is a team that can win without its best stuff, and that's exactly what Tufts did against Middlebury, battling to a 1-0 win to move into third place in the NESCAC.
