TCU Senate update

The Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate discussed the possibility of adding an International Community Representative to its ranks during its weekly meeting last night. The idea, which was proposed by freshman Senator Gauri Seth during the open forum period, was supported by several senators who argued that the international community needs a representative to help students with marginalization and cultural adjustment.

Inside Horse Racing | Macho Man, Take Charge head field at Big 'Cap

After just a nose separated first- and second-place finishers Mucho Macho Man and Will Take Charge in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 2 at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif., the two horses are geared up for an exhilarating rematch this Saturday in the Santa Anita Handicap. This year, the Big 'Cap, as it is commonly referred to, has one of the most thrilling fields of horses running since its creation in 1935. A mile and a quarter in length, the race is for horses who are four-years-old and over, and boasts a purse of $750,000. It is also a Grade I, the highest level of competition in horse racing. The race will be covered live at 7 p.m. on Fox Sports 1 on Saturday, March 8.

Eva Batalla-Mann | Valuable Delusions

You can't go backstage without an escort." This is blurted out of the mouth of a man wearing an oversized black suit standing by the stage door. You have got to be kidding me. The last time I saw Brett play was at a small coffee shop in my hometown wearing flip-flops, and his feel good music was barely audible over the espresso machine. There were no stage doors and no bouncers. I guess we have come a long way. I'm living in a world away from home and he's playing to hordes of happy plaid-wearing people singing along to every word of every song. I hadn't seen him in many moons and the transformation was palpable. It was like when a movie cuts to 10 years in the future and the characters' lives are completely upside down from where they were when the movie started. It's not every day you get to see someone become the person they always wanted to be. But when you do, and when they become a person making art for large groups of people, it's an exciting feeling.

Jonathan Moore | Politically Erect

It's a lot easier for people with power to deny a reality than for those who live that reality. With class, racial and familial privilege comes the power to irrevocably deny what on the surface seems obvious to many people. As time progresses, I am finding myself more and more obliged to detect people wearing these goggles and a) ask them to take them off for just a second (like in this column) or b) attempt to smack them off of their faces (in conversation). The later one gets me a bit more heated than the first but nevertheless, helping people see the possibility of becoming more "politically erect" instead of the mindless, meme-ing politically correct young Americans we've been trained to be is something that keeps a pep in my step and a venom on my tongue that I'm not letting go of anytime soon. On a college campus like Tufts,' where people's presumed liberal politics translates into at best inaction and complacency and at worst an appropriation orgy that commandeers conversations to benefit the wearers of denial goggles, some of us find ourselves tasked with snatching them off. It's a matter of dignity.

Nash Simpson | Throwblack Thursday

Paul Robeson, a commonly overlooked figure in the grand scheme of African American history, was the epitome of a Renaissance man. He distinguished himself in professional football, political activism, singing and acting. Robeson's powerful and robust, yet uniquely smooth bass timbre propelled him to the national limelight where he enjoyed an illustrious, albeit ephemeral, reign as a  Hollywood actor and singer. One of the highlights of his film career is the well-known "Showboat" (1936), made famous by his unforgettable rendition of "Ol' Man River." In the dozen or so movies he appeared in, Robeson's acting roles were fairly limited to archetypal roles reserved for big black males. Yet, his 1936 film, "Song of Freedom," temporarily released him from such confinements by providing him with the effective political voice that he had been yearning for by that time in his career.

It is now time to think what a true "scene from Spain" is. The only issue with this rather broad title is that Spain consists of a fair number of regions, each with its own unique scenes, foods, dialects and climates. Regions like Andaluc?a the south of Spain include the cities of Sevilla (its capital), Granada and C??diz - one of the oldest cities in Spain. This region includes both mountains and beautiful beaches, along with places to surf, ski and watch daily bullfighting and flamenco shows.

Rebecca Hutchinson | What's Poppin'

Once upon a time people couldn't instantly see the photos they took. They couldn't adjust the brightness or add a filter. They couldn't immediately crop out randos in the background, and their friends had to wait until the photos were developed to decide whether or not they approved of them. It was a scary time. And, on top of all that, once people had their non-filtered photos, there wasn't all that much they could do with them. Pictures went into albums and occasionally frames, and were pulled out every now and again to show visiting family members. But, for the most part, the only person who really got to see photos was the person who took them.

TCU Senate update

For a second meeting in a row, the Tufts Community Union (TCU) Senate analyzed a resolution proposing a one-year pilot program that would give Tufts students a MBTA discount pass, allowing them to use the Boston-area transportation services at a reduced price. The resolution references a survey indicating that 95 percent of polled students supported such a program. The Senate passed the resolution in a 20-0-1 vote. It will be presented to the school administration for approval.
