Dear Tufts community,
Fraternities at Tufts who affiliate themselves with national organizations have a complex dual responsibility. They must answer to both the Tufts community and their national headquarters. They must be reflective both of the values of this campus and those of a distant organization. They must exist at once as a part of Tufts and as an entity foreign to it.
For some time, we, the brothers of the Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter on this campus, have endeavored to navigate our dual responsibility to both campus and fraternity.
Several months ago, upon the foundation provided by our high standard of brotherhood, and on the basis of our unwavering commitment to inclusivity regardless of race, class, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, background or beliefs, we began to look critically at ourselves and have come to some important decisions about our status on this campus.
As a result of thoughtful consideration and much discussion, we have decided to disaffiliate ourselves from the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. Over the next few months, we will be transitioning to a Tufts-based fraternity. We look forward to engaging with the Tufts community from our renewed position and hope to remain a positive part of campus life in the future.
