The update disclosed that effective immediately, athletic practices will be discontinued for the remainder of the year. As indicated in the email, there is no evidence that the rise in COVID-19 cases is linked to athletics practices, but the cancellation of practices will be a precaution that the university will take in effort to reduce contact among students.
The gym opened mid-September and has not run into any major issues that have prevented it from staying open.
The ACC began conference play last Sunday, with UNC and Wake Forest competing at Chapel Hill after a slew of postponed games. Despite the large COVID-19 outbreaks at UNC that forced thousands of students to return home in August after a mere week on campus, the Tar Heels hosted the Deacons for the matchup.
