Dear Defne,
What should I do as a loveless junior who only has one year left?
Sincerely,
RR
Dearest RR,
Your brain might be stuck on the fact that your peers are slowly disappearing abroad, everyone is graduating soon and it’s time to start dating for marriage. Cast all those doubts aside! You don’t need to be afraid of fleeting time as that’s what makes everything so much sweeter now.
You’re sincerely mistaken in thinking that love operates on your timeline. Free yourself from all your expectations, but don’t lower your standards. Now isn’t the time to seek out or operate under labels. You’ll find greater success in connecting with the people around you when you aren’t hungry for an idealistic dream. Let yourself be taken by surprise.
The friend who caught your eye in a club meeting will slowly come around. Make sure your coffee dates at the Sink read as something beyond platonic, and see how they react. Take them on an adventure to Boston, and sink into their shoulder on the Green Line. Carry their bag when you both get weary.
Finally, remember that you’re never loveless. Take yourself out on a date to Trader Joe’s, smush onto a couch at the Loj with your found family, call a hometown friend or befriend a stranger at a concert. There is so much tenderness hidden in the corners of our lives. Savor it deeply before we all find ourselves in another world.
With love,
Defne
