Joel Omolade will serve as the next president of the student body and the Tufts Community Union Senate for the 2024–25 academic year, as announced by the Tufts Elections Commission on its website earlier today. Total election turnout was 30.36% of the student body, and over half of those students voted for Omolade — putting him ahead of the next candidate by 429 votes.
In a phone call with the Daily, Omolade said he was grateful for student turnout in the election and commended his fellow candidates on their campaigns.
“I’m really excited,” Omolade said. “I know I always say ‘better starts now’... but I am really looking forward to it. I’ve already started brainstorming. … I’m really excited to hit the ground running with the projects I have planned.”
The results are as follows:
Joel Omolade: 1,106 votes (54% of votes)
Krystal Mutebi: 677 votes (33% of votes)
Mikayla Paquette: 262 votes (13% of votes)
Abstain: 18 votes (1% of votes)
A breakdown of votes by class year is as follows:
First-years: 521 votes (25.25% of voting body)
Sophomores: 616 votes (29.86% of voting body)
Juniors: 583 votes (28.26% of voting body)
Seniors: 336 votes (16.29% of voting body)
Fifth-years: 7 votes (00.34% of voting body)
Omolade previously made headlines after ECOM suspended his campaign for alleged campaign violations. The TCU Judiciary overturned the suspension, ruling he had “engaged in solicitation of a club’s endorsement in exchange for personal favors” but that he was allowed to continue his campaign after issuing a statement acknowledging the findings.
The TCU Senate will vote on internal positions — including vice president, treasurer and the allocations board — in a closed meeting at 2 p.m. in JCC 160 on Sunday.
