It’s that time of year again — the part of the semester defined by whiplash between midterms and your Halloweekend plans. No matter what those may be, on Fridays and Saturdays we can all count on Late Night at Commons to be the cherry on top of a raucous night out or for a midnight snack.
But what to do when there’s no Late Night? With a three-day weekend coming up, and no late night at Commons this weekend, many students are bound to ask themselves this question. But never fear, you can still indulge in that late-night treat without breaking the bank.
Let’s say you’re just like me: A first-year who lives in Miller Hall, but also an Angeleno, who doesn’t want to have to venture too far out to grab something. What should you get?
The obvious answer is Pizza Days. In fact, it could be one of your only options depending on what time you finally stumble back to your dorm. Luckily for you, it’s cheap and close by. A large cheese pizza is just $17.99. They unfortunately have a $4.99 delivery fee, so you’ll have to make the judgment call on shelling out for that. I’d recommend against splurging on delivery, truthfully; it’s never really that hot by the time it arrives.
Craving something else? Unfortunately, there are not many other options. If you’re feeling up to it, you could order a whole rotisserie chicken from Kushari & Grill, which is also close by, but it’s going to cost you about $30. It isn’t Costco, but Costco isn’t open until 2 a.m. on Saturdays. It’s on the expensive side but it’s about your only other option. And hey, what’s better than a post-night-out girl dinner? All that’s left is to queue up some music — Alexa, play “Linger by The Cranberries” (1993) — and tear into that chicken (with your hands, of course.)
While your options are slim, don’t fret. There’s a silver lining here, a way to both save money and expand your food options: Grubhub+. All Tufts students are entitled to free subscriptions for the duration of their time as students. To sign up, simply download the app and select Tufts University under the campus affiliation page, or follow this guide.
A student Grubhub+ subscription comes with free delivery on most orders over $18 and 5% back in Grubhub credit on certain pickup orders. Best of all, the app allows you to pay with JumboCash at any restaurant on Grubhub. That’s right; craving food off campus and trying to use up all your JumboCash this semester? You’re no longer bound to just the list of nearby restaurants that take JumboCash.
Still craving Pizza Days? Now you can get it delivered without having to pay for delivery! Want something else? No problem. Why not get some Dumpling Kitchen without any delivery fee and pay with JumboCash just for the fun of it?
Late nights without Late Night just aren’t the same, but don’t let that spoil your fun. Besides, even if your night is ruined, you’ve just learned how to save on food at all times of the day. So go ahead and order that $8 pick-me-up matcha latte tomorrow morning. I’m sure it’s just what you need.
