Letter from the Managing Board

An undeniable truth of creating effective, holistic news coverage is that to represent the community as accurately as possible, a paper needs to have writers who bring myriad perspectives and experiences to the table and to their writing. Unfortunately, in our paper and in media outlets across the country, the voices and identities that create the fabric of our communities often do not line up with who has opportunities to report on those communities.

We also recognize that being a part of a college newspaper team can be an important springboard into a robust journalism career after a student leaves Tufts, but not everyone is afforded the luxury to work on the Daily during their time here. In the hopes of promoting the tradition of journalism, preserving the integrity of the paper and giving our community the coverage it deserves, we hope to do everything in our power to ensure that anyone who wants the opportunity to work at the Daily is given the opportunity to do so. To help mitigate some of the financial burden that may prevent students from feeling that they cannot be a part of the Daily, we’ve created a scholarship fund in the hopes that students with a passion for journalism will not be kept from working for the Daily because of financial need. This semester, we have two scholarships available for first-years who demonstrate need and a sincere interest in journalism. While we recognize that this scholarship fund will not fully address the need at hand, we think that this is an important first step in creating a more representative news environment.

We look forward to the rest of the semester and this new chapter in the Daily's mission to be a more inclusive and intentional space. We welcome any questions about this Daily initiative.

Sincerely, Arin Kerstein, Sophie Lehrenbaum and Jake Taber The Fall 2016 Managing Board
