Tufts undergraduate unexpectedly dies on Saturday

Tufts undergraduate HyunJae Kim died unexpectedly on the morning of Saturday, May 9, according to an email sent to the Tufts community by University President Anthony Monaco. Kim, a junior studying biomedical engineering, hailed from Seoul, South Korea.

Junior Haylee Rosenblatt, executive director of Tufts Emergency Medical Services (TEMS), said that TEMS handled the call to the best of its ability.

"TEMS responded rapidly and provided the best care possible in a very unfortunate situation," she told the Daily in an email.

Rosenblatt could give no further information about the call, citing patient confidentiality.

Tufts University has notified the family and is respecting their wishes regarding what information to release.

"The Tufts community is saddened to report the unexpected death of an undergraduate student," Director of Public Relations Kim Thurler said in a statement to the Daily. "The family has been notified and our deepest sympathy goes out to them. We will be guided by the family's wishes in any further release of information."

The Interfaith Center will hold a Celebration of Life ceremony for Kim on Friday, May 15, at 4:00 p.m., according to an email sent to the Tufts community on May 14. The ceremony will include reflections and a reception. Any students who are not currently on campus are encouraged to contact the University Chaplaincy in order to honor Kim in the fall.
