For sophomore economics major and communications and media studies minor Mika Sanger, every day offers a new artistic opportunity. In an email interview with the Daily, the Los Angeles native discussed her artistic accomplishments so far at Tufts and the goals she wants to achieve before graduation.
Sanger recalled, “When I got to Tufts, I found that the Wind Ensemble was a great way to integrate my love for music without all the pressure that I had experienced in high school.” The lack of stress in this group allowed her to explore new artistic avenues, taking “a Music and Animation course, as well as a Digital Storytelling class.” While she has “had music in [her] life for fifteen years and been in a band or an orchestra for the past nine years,” scoring film is a new endeavor.
“The film I scored my freshman year is probably my favorite artistic/musical accomplishment … I had no skills or knowledge of even how to approach it … In the end, I had an incredible time removing myself from my comfort zone to create a great piece of art,” she said.
She mused, “I would really like to score a feature-length film before I graduate. Whether that’s a film I create or a work already released, I’d like to expand my abilities to form the perceptions of the audience through music.”
Constantly relating music to her personal life, Sanger noted, “I imagine every day of my life as a scene from a movie to a soundtrack that varies based on the weather, my mood or even the people I’m with. By looking at my life through a camera lens, each day becomes a work of art.”
