With the opening of the new Aidekman Arts Center, the old Arena Theater was becoming obsolete. The university spent $20,000 to demolish it on Aug. 5, 1991. The demolition was met with student concern, however, as the new theater was the only designated performing space for a growing number of Tufts ensembles. Former University President Jean Mayer said at the time that the demolition of the theater would "bring [the land] back to nature," to offset numerous construction projects at the time.
