For the second-straight year, senior midfielder Emily Cannon of the Tufts field hockey team has been selected as a First Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association of America (NFHCA). This award, along with others received by athletes and teams in the last two weeks, highlights a prolific 2013 fall season for the Jumbos.
Cannon
Cannon is now just the third Jumbo in program history to receive First Team All-American honors in back-to-back years. Her former teammate Tamara Brown (LA '11) did so in 2009 and 2010, and MargiScholtes (LA '10) earned the honors in 2008 and 2009. Representatives from three other NESCAC schools join Cannon on the First Team.
Cannon contributed 21 points for the Jumbos this fall with nine goals and three assists. The senior started all 72 games in her four-year Tufts career. This season, she has also been named to the NFHCA All-New England West Region first team and the All-NESCAC first team for the second year in a row.
Women's Soccer
The Tufts women's soccer team received a 2013 Team Academic Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) as recognition for the team's outstanding work on the field and in the classroom.
The Team Academic award, which recognizes the Jumbos' 3.41 cumulative grade point average, is the team's eighth since 1999. Ten members of the team were individually selected to the All-Academic NESCAC team due to their excellence in academics.
The NSCAA also recognized junior defender Catharine Greer and senior tri-captain forward Anya Kaufmann as members of the Continental Tire All-Region Women's Soccer Teams. Greer was selected to the All-New England second team for the second time in a row, while Kaufmann was picked for the third team for the first time in her career.
Volleyball
Three members of the Tufts volleyball team earned awards from the New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) this past week. Junior middle blocker Isabel Kuhel, who finished second in both kills and blocks on the season for the Jumbos, was selected to the NEWVA All-New England Second Team.
Freshman middle blocker Elizabeth Ahrens was one of seven players in New England to garner All-Rookie Team honors, as she led both the Jumbos and the NESCAC in blocks per set. Ahrens also contributed offensively in her freshman campaign, posting the team's fourth-highest total for kills with 160.
Lastly, senior tri-captain libero Virginia Clay was selected to play in the NEWVA Senior Classic. This game, composed of the region's 32 top seniors, will take place on Dec. 8 at UMass Boston. Clay was a staple of the Jumbos' defense, compiling 168 digs in her last season wearing the brown and blue.
Blumenthal
Men's soccer team senior tri-captain midfielder Scott Blumenthal was recently named the MVP of the New England Intercollegiate Soccer League (NEISL) Senior All-Star game due to a three-goal performance that helped his team to an 8-2 victory.
Blumenthal and classmate defender Ben Ewing were selected for the game this past Sunday at Harvard. The highlight of the MVP performance for Blumenthal was the third goal of his hat trick, in which Ewing played a ball in from the right corner and Blumenthal made a move past a defender and finished past the keeper.
