Senior tri-captain Scott Blumenthal of the men's soccer team was recently named to the District I Capital One Academic All-District team for NCAA Div. III players. The teams, picked by the College Sports Information Directors of America, recognize the nation's top student athletes for outstanding performance both on and off the field.
Blumenthal was the only player from the NESCAC selected for the District I team, which comprises student athletes from Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Later this month, Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot voting will occur, and members from the All-District teams are eligible for selection to one of three All-America teams. Last season, Pat Bauer (E '13), a former co-captain and defender for the Jumbos, was selected to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America Second Team for NCAA Div. III.
Blumenthal started 10 of 15 games this fall for the Jumbos and finished with two goals on the season, the most recent of which came against Conn. College on Oct. 12. Blumenthal also netted the first goal in an early season non-conference matchup with Suffolk University on Sept. 11 as the Jumbos rolled to a 7-0 victory.
In 2012, Blumenthal was a member of a Jumbos side that qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1996. He finished third on the team in points with 11 coming from five goals and one assist. The Jumbos reached the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship before falling to Williams in penalties.
Blumenthal is also a two-time Academic All-NESCAC honoree, and he will earn that accolade once again later this fall.
