Lumay Wang | The Daily Shopper

Dear seniors: I've watched one too many episodes of "What Not to Wear." There seems to be a trend of people who fall into a fashion rut after graduating from college.

You're about to graduate from one of the most prestigious colleges in the United States, so have some pride! Personal style and grooming extend well beyond our college years.

Celebrity stylists and fashion gurus have been pumping out guides to style. Following in the same vein, here is my list of five necessary things you should have in your closet:

5. Black leather purse. In addition to putting some effort into everyday appearance, I strongly suggest investing in quality pieces. Take the time now to buy Monsac's Westport Dome Satchel in Onyx ($328 at Monsac.com). Even if the price may seem steep, the high-quality leather construction will last you years. Instead of buying ten cheap bags that fray and fall apart after one season, buy something of quality.

There is a visible difference between high and low quality. I believe that high-quality items include a basic black purse, black leather pumps and a neutral-colored suit. For those entering the corporate world, looking sharp is almost part of the job description.

4. White button-down shirt. Versatility is a buzz word in this list, and nothing is as versatile as white. Dress it up or down - it's up to you. I suggest finding a button-down of high-quality cotton with a tailored fit. Make sure the bust darts do not sag and the shoulder and back remain flat. A telltale sign of an ill-fitting shirt is straining at the buttons, especially around the chest. I'm a fan of Banana Republic's tailored cotton shirt ($39.99 at BananaRepublic.com). I have thrown mine in the wash so many times, and it still does not look worn.

3. Fun, one-of-a-kind piece. This one allows a lot of flexibility with each shopper. Maybe it is a pair of earrings purchased at a craft fair or a printed shift dress discovered at a thrift store. Personally, I believe that this item should have a special story behind it or a reason why it should remain in your closet for years. Another way to think of this one is to treat it as an accent to your wardrobe.

2. Black leather flats. I'm sure you've heard of this one before. These seriously save you from back problems and achy feet. The key is to search for leather soles, which often are a mark of quality. Leather soles last longer and can easily be repaired.

Also look for slim styles. When the toe is too round, it tends to make the wearer look juvenile; tapered is more flattering. Rumor has it that Lanvin has the most comfortable flats, but for those of us constricted by bank accounts, Nine West makes some great options. Their "Mae" style ($130 at NineWest.com) reminds me of Salvatore Ferragamo, and the grosgrain ribbon is just darling.

1. Dark jeans. Yup, you have definitely seen and heard this all over fashion magazines everywhere. Simple, flattering jeans are a must. Just because you're entering the working world does not mean that you will stop wearing these! In fact, unless you work on Wall Street, you probably will wear these to work.

Here is a simple rule of thumb: Be aware of your body shape. If you recognize that you have more junk in the trunk, cigarette and straight-leg stlyes are just not for you.

It has been a pleasure writing for the Tufts community. Congratulations to all the graduates, and keep staying fabulous!
