Wizards to put down wands, pick up guitars

Who said bookworms don't like to party? This Friday night, Tufts' Harry Potter fans may want to put down their copies of "The Deathly Hallows" (2007) for a few hours as Oxfam Café hosts a handful of Harry Potter-themed "wizard rock" bands.

The event is a collaboration between Tufts' Harry Potter Alliance, a brand-new organization seeking to connect fans of Harry Potter to social justice issues, and Oxfam's Midnight Café series.

Even for those who aren't very familiar with the books, the lineup of bands still promises to entertain.

"The bands we picked are really skilled and have experienced musicians," said Molly Newman, president of the Harry Potter Alliance. "They have a great sense of humor and like to incorporate a lot of audience interaction. [The show] is a great way to get introduced to the genre."

Though wizard rock bands may not fit into what most people define as mainstream music, the Alliance was able to cast a few spells and get five wizard rock bands to perform together in the same room.

"In fact, the wizard rock scene is actually really big," Newman said. "You wouldn't think so because it's a really specific genre, but there are wizard rock fans all over the world."

The lineup for Friday night includes Draco and the Malfoys, Roonil Wazlib, Remus and the Lupins, Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills, and The Whomping Willows, who will be celebrating the release of their latest album, "III."

"Most of the bands are old friends of mine," Newman said, "So I just called them and asked if they would play the event and they [quickly] agreed."

The show, titled "Wizard Rockathon: Harry Potter Music Night at Oxfam," is scheduled to run from 8-11 p.m at Oxfam Café in back of Miller Hall. The event is free, but a suggested donation of $3 per person will be given directly to Oxfam America.
