Papa John's, Yoshi's among local restaurants that want to replace Domino's and join MOPS

The Tufts Community Senate is making it a priority to find out how much students really like Domino's Pizza.

The local franchise has been off of the points system since Dining Services found out this summer that it changed ownership last year.

Since Dining Services' policy indicates that when a restaurant changes ownership, the student body can vote to either keep it on points or choose a new establishment, the Senate will conduct a poll this month.

While local Domino's owner Henry Askew is hopeful that the student body will vote his restaurant back on, other businesses are vying to take its place.

Sophomore Senator Constance Mourning said that the Senate has contacted a number of restaurants, including Pranzi's, Papa John's, Deli-icious, Pizza Days, Yoshi's and Helen's Roast Beef to inform them of the opening in the points system. There will also be room in the poll for write-in candidates.

The response from these restaurants has been enthusiastic.

"We're very excited that this great opportunity has finally arrived for us," local Papa John's franchise owner Jimmy Astarita said. "We already know that Tufts students enjoy our pizza because we get so much business from them."

Some of the businesses have long been trying to get on points, but since Dining Services can only process six at a time, they have had infrequent opportunities to take part in the system.

"I've been trying to get on for a while but I guess [there haven't been] openings," Pranzi's owner Steven Bates said. "I got a lot to offer - the calzones are pretty big."

Helen's Roast Beef manager Klod Qyrasi was also eager to demonstrate that his restaurant would appeal to students.

"Our kitchen has just been upgraded and we are ready to increase our business with Tufts University," he said.

The winning restaurant will join the five other restaurants that accept points: Andrea's House of Pizza, Espresso Pizza, Wing Works, Pasta Pisa/Café de Crepe and Panda Palace.

TCU President Neil DiBiase said he is looking forward to the upcoming poll.

"This survey is a really great chance for students to become involved in a program that affects them directly," he said.
