The US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association has named Tufts sophomore Catherine Beck its NCAA New England Div. III Female Track Athlete of the Year. Wednesday's announcement came on the heels of Beck's 13th-place finish in the 5000 meter race at NCAA Div. III Nationals held at St. Olaf College in Minnesota last weekend.
The nod comes after a record-breaking season for Beck, who led the Jumbos to a second place finish in the New England Div. III Championships on Feb. 18, winning the mile race (5:00.66) and taking second in the 3000 meters (9:54.57). The Brookline, NH native also set a school record in the 5K on Jan. 28, clocking in at 17:09.18 at the Terrier Classic. Last November, Beck was the first Tufts cross country runner to complete her race at Nationals, recording a 101st overall finish.
