Sophomore Peter Maher was arraigned for assault and battery of a police officer in Somerville District Court Tuesday morning.
The charges stem from an incident with a Tufts University Police Department officer on Oct. 29, the night the Red Sox won the World Series.
According to records of proceedings from the court clerk's office, the judge set Maher's trial for Sept. 7, 2005, and granted Maher pre-trial probation until that date.
The judge also mandated that Maher attend an alcohol abuse program through Tufts. A court clerk who wished to remain anonymous said "sometimes the judge tries to help the kids out so they won't have a record," and the nine-month delay will provide Maher with a chance to undergo the treatment program.
Maher is the son of Roland Maher, Tufts' director of Administration and Finance.
