Athletes of the Week

Dave Sorensen, Men's Track and Field

Senior quad-captain Dave Sorensen continues to excel in his leadership role for the men's track and field team. This past weekend at the Stonehill Skyhawk Invitational, Sorensen won the 3,000-meter steeplechase event. His time of 9:14.76 was comfortably within the NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 9:23 flat, as well as comfortably ahead of the competition. The closest finisher was Boston College's Timothy Ritchie, who finished nearly 30 seconds behind Sorensen with a time of 9:41.01. Overcoming fierce Div. I competition and bitter conditions, Sorensen led the Jumbos to an overall first-place victory at th invitational.

The steeplechase victory is just the latest of a plethora of spectacular races Sorensen has run over the past few months in both his indoor and outdoor track seasons. He led his team to a first-place finish at the New England Div. III Championships at the end of February by running a 4:16.04 mile - good for fourth place - as well as the anchor leg mile-run in the distance medley, in which Sorensen edged out Williams' Edgar Kosgey by .41 seconds to lead his team to victory.

Tufts will travel to Northeastern next weekend to participate in the Bernard Solomon Invite.

Amanda Roberts, Women's Lacrosse

Freshman midfielder Amanda Roberts compiled an impressive 12 points in helping the women's lacrosse team win two games this past week. In those two games, she doubled her points total for the entire season.

Roberts scored four goals and dished two assists in Tufts' 19-6 thrashing of Bridgewater State on Thursday, before contributing six more goals in a thrilling 15-14 victory over Colby on Saturday.

In Tufts' 12-11 loss to Trinity on March 29, Roberts scored two goals and had one assist. Roberts' improved play was a welcome sign for the Jumbos, who entered Thursday's matchup riding a two-game losing streak.

In the game against Colby, Roberts' sixth score, which took place with 9:12 left in the game, began a run of four unanswered Tufts goals in its successful bid for a late comeback. After the Mules took the lead late in the game, Roberts rose to the occasion again, tying the score before sophomore Jenna Abelli notched the game-winner 12 seconds later.

Against Bridgewater State, Roberts helped to set the tone early by having a hand in three of the Jumbos eight unanswered goals to open the game.

Roberts and the rest of the women's lacrosse team will resume their schedule on Thursday with a game against Endicott College.
