The Tufts-New England Medical Center (NEMC) announced this month that Margaret Vosburgh will succeed Ed Schottland in January as executive vice president and chief operating officer (COO). As COO, Vosburgh will oversee all day-to-day operations and decision-making at Tufts-NEMC.
Brooke Tyson Hynes, a spokesperson for Tufts-NEMC, said that Vosburgh was chosen from "a great slate of candidates." She won out because she is so highly qualified, Hynes said, citing Vosburgh's "incredible background" in nursing and clinical leadership.
"[We are] excited about having Margaret join us," Hynes said.
Vosburgh served most recently as the COO at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, part of the North Shore-LIJ Health System.
Before serving at the Long Island center, Vosburgh was the executive director of the Swedish Health System in Seattle, Washington, and the vice president of center operations at the Albany Medical Center in Albany, New York.
She has also served as director of perioperative services at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and the Albany Medical Center.
Vosburgh will be working alongside Schottland, the current COO and executive vice president, to prepare to take the reins at Tufts-NEMC.
"[Schottland will] retire at the end of the year, so they'll be working together to transition and she'll start at the first of the new year," Hynes said.
Vosburgh earned an MBA from the University of Southern California and was a Wharton Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.
Vosburgh will report directly to Ellen Zane, the president and chief operating officer of Tufts-NEMC.
In its hunt for a new executive vice president and chief operating officer, the medical center partnered with Phillips DiPisa, an executive search firm that works with healthcare providers, managed care organizations and life sciences firms.
Tufts-NEMC is a medical institution that houses two full-service hospitals; one serves adults, and the other, the Floating Hospital for Children, is dedicated exclusively to pediatric care.
While the medical center is not directly part of Tufts as an academic institution, it is the principal teaching hospital for Tufts' School of Medicine.
