The Daily Drip: Girl Grass

The Daily Drip
Graphic by Rachel Wong

We are breaching no jacket weather, the snow has melted and it’s finally getting dark later than 6 p.m. You know what that means? Getting a Sink drink and sitting on Prez Lawn for hours when you should be studying for midterms. At least that’s what I’m doing as I review this week’s Sink-nature drink: Girl Grass.

The name Girl Grass is the epitome of spring. This alliterative moniker is simple, yet descriptive. I would say that this drink’s title is a bit narrow because it’s gendered, but knowing The Sink’s usual customer base, I don’t think that would deter anyone from ordering it. If you’re uncomfortable ordering this drink because you’re not a girl, try ordering a ‘Guy Grass’ or a ‘Person Plant’ and see if the baristas catch your drift.

I waited a lovely 2 minutes and 32 seconds for my drink this week because I was the only one in line. The key is to go during class times and not in the transition periods, so if you’re planning on skipping, at least be first in line at The Sink to make the most of your deviant behavior. The iridescent St. Patrick’s Day decor was a nice touch for the short wait, but I was disappointed to be met with the far less aesthetically pleasing shade of green that was Girl Grass.

Upon first sip, I was suddenly 7 years old, frolicking barefoot in my backyard on a sunny April afternoon, scouring for the best dandelions to put in my flower crown. The lemonade provided a tart sweetness that paired nicely with the vegetal earthiness of the matcha. On their own, these two drinks scream spring, but they’re even better together.

The lemonade in the Girl Grass made it utterly refreshing, a word I don’t usually associate with matcha drinks. I was able to get all of the grassy flavors of the matcha without any of the grainy texture that often accompanies it.

On the menu, the Girl Grass contains lavender in addition to the matcha and the lemonade. I’m not sure if there wasn’t enough added, or if the other ingredients were too overpowering, but that floral flavor was not detectable in this drink. I found this to be unfortunate, since I think it could have perfectly rounded out the spring energy of this beverage.

I’d definitely recommend this drink to someone who wants a light spring beverage or anyone who is interested in trying matcha for the first time. It’s also a great way to get a cold caffeinated concoction — especially if you don’t drink coffee — without getting the heart palpitations from an energy drink.

In these trying times, a Girl Grass is great for a pick-me-up and I’ll definitely get it again when I want to distract myself from final exams. Stay tuned for next time, when I review one of the Sink’s chocolatey creations: the Hot Karl.

Always brewing the best reviews,

Dylan Fee

Summary A refreshing drink for a spring day. Has something for everyone, from matcha lovers to those with a sweet tooth.
